Bitcoin Rebounds 50% on Average After 60% Drop During Midterm Elections
Bitcoin (BTC) has historically dropped over 60% during U.S. midterm election years in 2014, 2018, and 2022, followed by an average rebound of over 50%. According to analysis from CryptoPotato, there is growing interest in the possibility of a similar trend repeating ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. In 2014, the decline continued due to the Mt. Gox incident, while in 2018, the price fell from around $20,000 to below $3,500. In 2022, Bitcoin dropped to around $16,000 amid interest rate hikes and the collapse of FTX. The price movements before and after the midterms were influenced by political uncertainty, dampened investor sentiment, and changes in fiscal policy. However, it is difficult to definitively state that elections directly impact Bitcoin prices. CryptoPotato presented a sell scenario based on past midterm trends, suggesting 25% in 2027, 50% in 2028, and 25% in 2029, but this is merely the opinion of specific analysts. While midterm elections can influence fiscal policy and regulatory direction, actual policy changes are not solely determined by election outcomes. Historical cases show that Bitcoin's volatility was significant around midterm elections, and whether a similar trend will occur in 2026 depends on interest rates, liquidity, regulation, and market shocks.
