Bitcoin Outperforms S&P 500 Over Four-Year Horizon

Analyst Willy Woo claims that Bitcoin has never shown worse results than the stock market when holding the asset for four years, even if the purchase occurred at the peak of the cycle. The average annual growth rate of BTC during this period is 42%, while the S&P 500 shows around 19%. Woo used data from Glassnode to create a chart of the annual returns of Bitcoin and the S&P 500 from 2017 to the fall of 2026. During this time frame, the BTC line has never dipped below the index's figure. In 2017-2018 and during the peak of the bull market in 2021, the four-year return of Bitcoin reached 150-170%. By 2025, the BTC figure nearly equaled the S&P 500, but full parity did not occur, and BTC began to widen the gap again. Woo also compared Bitcoin's returns to those of Renaissance Technologies hedge fund, which yielded 39% annually. Thus, the current 42% for BTC appears more attractive. Woo emphasizes that the key takeaway is the resilience of the results over a long horizon, allowing even those who entered Bitcoin at local peaks to achieve better results compared to American stocks.
