AMC CEO Criticizes Robinhood's Stock Tokens, Claims No Association with the Company
AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron took to the X platform to criticize the AMC stock tokens launched by Robinhood, stating that AMC has no connection to the product and does not endorse it. Aron expressed that Robinhood is advancing a tokenization plan involving real-world assets related to AMC, calling the practice "despicable" and "outrageous," and that AMC will seek an investigation from external securities legal counsel regarding the matter. Robinhood's stock tokens are derivatives that provide holders with economic exposure to U.S. stocks but do not confer ownership of the underlying shares. This conflict comes as tokenized stocks are attracting attention from crypto exchanges, brokerages, and Wall Street firms, with blockchain tracks enabling round-the-clock trading, faster settlements, and broader distribution. Robinhood has made tokenization a core part of its crypto expansion, launching tokens that track hundreds of U.S. stocks and ETFs last year, and is building its own blockchain to support tokenized assets. Previously, OpenAI also publicly denied any association with Robinhood's tokens, stating they are not OpenAI equity and that it has not collaborated with or endorsed Robinhood. AMC's opposition brings this controversy to the level of publicly traded companies.
