A mother and her son on trial for embezzling 1.5 million euros in cryptocurrencies
A mother and her son are on trial this Tuesday at the correctional court of Draguignan for embezzling 1.5 million euros in cryptocurrencies from a couple in their sixties, under the pretext of a fake real estate sale in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The couple had put their secondary residence, valued at 12 million euros, up for sale when a supposed Italian buyer offered a higher price. Intermediaries asked the sellers to provision the sale fees in cryptocurrencies, with a physical meeting to prove the transaction. Two meetings took place in Milan, where the suspects allegedly obtained the couple's banking information using glasses equipped with cameras. Several transfers were made during the meeting, raising doubts among the victims about their situation. The victims filed a complaint the next day, and after a year-long investigation, the suspects were arrested on June 25 in a villa in Cavalaire. Placed under judicial control, they deny the charges. Three properties belonging to them, with a total value of 3 million euros, have been seized. They are being tried for organized fraud and lack of justification of resources, and the possibility of an organized network will be examined during the hearing.
