OpenAI has commercialized its full-duplex voice model, GPT-Live. In human evaluations, 75.7% of participants preferred GPT-Live-1 over the existing Advanced Voice Mode. OpenAI announced that it will provide GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini to ChatGPT Voice users worldwide on July 8. GPT-Live-1 will serve as the default voice model for paid users, while GPT-Live-1 mini will be the default for free users. GPT-Live has transformed the response unit of voice AI from a one-sided 'turn' to a continuous 'flow'. While traditional voice AIs generate responses after the user's speech has ended, GPT-Live processes input speech continuously while generating output speech simultaneously. In evaluations of conversations lasting 5 to 10 minutes under the same conditions, participants preferred GPT-Live-1 at 75.7% and GPT-Live-1 mini at 69.2%. There are limitations to the support range, and initially, it will not support video, screen sharing, connected apps, or plugins. OpenAI assesses risks related to self-harm, psychosis, violence, and sexual content in the GPT-Live system card, and can adjust responses or terminate conversations if warning signs are detected.
