5,566 BTC drop in leveraged short positions fails to confirm bullish trend for Bitcoin
Leveraged funds' net bearish position in CME's Bitcoin futures decreased by 5,566.5 BTC-equivalent from July 21 to July 28. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission's report, released on July 31, indicated that asset managers' net bullish position weakened by 2,204.3 BTC-equivalent during the same period. As of July 28, leveraged funds held a net short position of 33,712.3 BTC, while asset managers had a net long position of 11,284.3 BTC. The standard Bitcoin futures net for leveraged funds improved by 1,076 contracts (5,380 BTC), and the micro Bitcoin futures net increased by 1,865 contracts (186.5 BTC). Conversely, asset managers saw a decline in their standard-contract net by 428 contracts (2,140 BTC) and a drop in micro-contract net by 643 contracts (64.3 BTC). The CFTC's classification of traders does not specify the reasons for each position, making it unclear if leveraged-fund shorts are purely bearish or part of other strategies. CME's July 30 bulletin reported standard Bitcoin futures settling at 64,775 dollars for July, 65,085 dollars for August, and 65,335 dollars for September. A July 29 analysis noted a decline in perpetual-market buying and long funding, alongside significant spot Bitcoin ETF outflows totaling 526.5 million dollars. Despite the reduction in leveraged funds' net bearish exposure, the simultaneous pullback by asset managers suggests that this snapshot does not indicate a broad institutional bullish shift.
